The Permanent Diaconate Office serves the diocesan bishop, and it currently functions in two separate areas: the Permanent Deacons of the Diocese and the Permanent Deacon Aspirant and Candidate Program.The Office of the Permanent Diaconate is administered by the Vicar for Permanent Deacons and Director of Deacon Formation, whose responsibilities are outlined below.

Appointed by the BishopRepresents the Bishop to Order of Deacons of the Diocese.
Supports the personal, spiritual, and ministerial growth of the deacons and their wives.
Offers continuing education for both spiritual and ministerial growth of the deacons and their wives.
Assists in assessing the needs of church ministry in diocesan parishes, other diocesan entities, insofar as such needs may be met by a Permanent Deacon.
Provides for the professional evaluation and personnel review of all deacons ministering within the diocese, including supervising and evaluating positions held by deacons.
Assists individual deacons and staffs where they minister, in the area of conflict management and arbitration.
Fosters awareness on every level regarding the ministry of deacons and the potential for which they are capable in their on-going and discerning ministry.
Responsible for the overall organization and administration of the various programs within the diaconal structure.
Coordinates the meetings of the Deacon Deanery and At-large representatives of the Order and acts in the capacity of Chairman of the Executive Committee formed by the Deacon Deanery and At-large representatives.
Develops and administers the budget for diaconal ministry.
Director of Permanent Deacon Formation
Appointed by the BishopSelects members for the Permanent Deacon Formation Team in the areas of Liturgical Formation, Spiritual Formation and Pastoral Formation.
Selects members for the Permanent Deacon Formation Board on Admissions and Scrutinies.
Develops reviews and maintains the Permanent Deacon Formation Program in collaboration with the Formation Team members.
Works with the Team to ensure that requirements of the program are met.
Schedules meetings with the Formation Board on Admissions and Scrutinies as needed.
Develops and oversees the inquiry and recruitment for new Permanent Deacon Formation classes.
Oversees the admission of new aspirants into the Permanent Deacon Formation Program and the presentation of findings to the Formation Board.
Communicates on a regular basis with pastors as to the progress of their applicants.
Develops and administers the budget for the Permanent Deacon Formation Program.
