A "Celebration of Life" Mass will be held for Father George Sammut, who passed away on December 27, 2022. Bishop Wack will be the presider. All are welcome.
Father George Sammut died on the Feast of St. John the Apostle/Evangelist. He was incardinated as a priest in the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee in 2013. In January 2019, Father George retired as pastor of St. Anne Parish in Pensacola. Following his retirement, he moved to live with his family in Canada.
Father George was ordained to the priesthood as a member of the Companions of the Cross in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1999, and after several assignments in Canada sought an assignment in the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee in 2009. He first served as parochial vicar at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and then was assigned parish administrator of St. Anne in Marianna and St. Joseph the Worker in Chipley, where he served for five years. It was during his time in Marianna and Chipley that he also served as administrator of Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Sunny Hills. In 2015, he was reassigned and made pastor of St. Anne Parish in Pensacola.
He leaves behind his most loving daughter Carie Lynn Sammut and his beloved granddaughter and goddaughter Annalise; his cherished sister Catherine Gulka; dearest brothers, John, Fred and Frank, Chuck and James. Father George had so many close friends, including the Kovacs, the Dowlings, the Devereaux's, the Sifuentes', the Garcias', the Plesters, the Darvilles, Father Carlos Martins, Gianni Cerasoli, Tuy Ray, Enielle Everett, and his life long friends, Jim, Brian and Carl.
Father George had made many friends as a parish priest. He loved all his parishioners at every parish he was assigned. Being a parish priest was his greatest joy and source of happiness and so he remains a priest forever in the Order of Melchizedek.
The Funeral Mass took place on January 2, 2023, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in London, Ontario.
