Pensacola, FL – Like many people in our country, I am distressed at the sight of children being separated from their parent(s) at our borders. While understanding the need for our country to regulate migration and protect our borders, my brother bishops and I believe that we can and must do better. While our government leaders draft and implement a more humane immigration system for the United States, I hope and pray that we may always uphold the dignity of the people who come to us in desperate situations. Of course, using the threat of separating children from their parent(s) as a deterrent to others is abhorrent.
I refer you to the statement of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops (dated June 1, 2018) for more information on this issue. Above all, please pray with me for a more compassionate resolution to the issues our country faces regarding immigration.
